Leading a Professional Learning Simulation

An interactive simulation designed for leaders who are responsible for shaping and implementing education initiatives in schools and districts.

This facilitated, online simulation gives leaders guided practice in planning for, implementing, and sustaining educational innovations. It focuses on how to best address the specific needs of teachers, students, and other stakeholders and introduces leaders to potential challenges they must recognize and navigate effectively in order to achieve sustained effective practice.

The Leading Professional Learning simulation was developed by Katherine Stiles, Susan Mundry, and Carol Bershad. Originally designed as an in-person, cooperative board game, the simulation has been adapted for an online format. The game is designed to help educators learn to build a community of practice among school faculty that leads to sustained use of effective practices and improved learning for all.

This activity provides an opportunity to work with others to solve a task that is useful in our daily work and provide the tools and or reflection of your own practices as we look at change.

New Mexico Public Education Department

All NM Public Education Department staff were invited to participate in the simulation to unify their work rolling out a new Instructional Scope.

Nearly 300 Superintendents, Principals, and other education leaders across the state participated in the simulation to support them in thinking about 90-day plans for rapid school improvement and implementing quality distance and hybrid learning programs.

New Mexico Leadership Cadre

School Principals and lead teachers participated in the simulation as part of a year-long leadership cadre series. Following the simulation, participants used an identical approach to plan out the professional learning they would offer back at their own school sites.
