Dimensions of Science Education

Traditional science education has mostly been about teachers helping students master scientific facts. The vision for next generation science is to have students engage in the work of science and engineering.

By engaging in learning this way, students develop skills in science and engineering practices, adopt the habits of thinking of scientists and engineers, and gain science and engineering knowledge. Thinking of next generation science education as having eight dimensions takes learning further by promoting student engagement and the integrated skills required for modern lives and careers.

This one-page resource outlines eight dimensions of science education that promote equitable engagement of all learners.

This helps me go beyond the three dimensions of the NGSS and this about how science education fits in with all the other work I do with my students.
